So when I first started using a business card scanner CardMunch was the way to go. Not any more! It is sad really since that program is supported by Linkedin and it just does not work anymore at all. When you scan a business card it is supposed to be sent back to their server and then returns to you with the information. Ummm it just does not do it anymore plain and simple. I have had cards pending for half a year now literally.
So now the search has led me to find a replacement and I
found a great one. The answer:
CamCard! This app is awesome and is a
clear winner over the other ones I tested.
I have rarely found such a clear winner since many apps are good in some
ways where another is lacking. Most of the other apps I tested did not even
pass the basic tests so I dropped them right away even though they seemed
promising.
And the winner is.......
CamCard |
You can Register 30 to 50 business cards initially then 3
per week after that for free. More cards
are available free by sharing the app on Facebook or Twitter or by creating a
personal card which all seems fair to me.
Cloud Storage: It
Stores the scanned cards locally, but sync's
them to the cloud storage when
you are in Wifi mode (as a setting).
Later you can access them from their website Camcard.com or another
device like you iPad or an Android device.
You can also recover the cards if you lose your device. The
iPad app is a native app as well so the interface is quite nice.
You can arrange cards in to custom groups like Clients or Colleagues.
Scan a second side of
a card: this I had not seen in any other app. My Wife's card has a second side as an artist
and it was the first time I could capture the whole thing. You scan the second scan once the card has
been scanned and saved the first time.
Share cards via
email, sms or by creating a scannable QR Code: This is a great feature especially the create
your own QR Code. Once your own card is
created, for example, you can have it show a scannable QR code that another
person can scan with their smart phone to share your information.
Linkedin search:
Once the information is scanned and saved you can search Linkedin with the
business information in case you want to connect to that person that way also.
Add notes to the card:
this is a great feature to create a context or where you me the person for
example or if you know through another friend.
Multiple language
support: I did not have a card to test this, but is claimed on the app
download site. Comment on your
experience with this below.
Here is the second Runner up which at least worked:
Yolu Card |
Yolu Card: This app works the way CardMunch used to work
where the card is downloaded to the main server and the scanned data is sent
back to you. The app said the scan would
be done within one hour but was done in a few minutes which was great. Also the result back was an accurate reading
so it is a useful app.
The issue I take is that data is required for the scans at
the moment you take the picture. This is
not great if you are trying to conserve data usage while outside of a WiFi
zone. If this app had an option to wait
to send the data when you are in Wifi then that would be ok, but it does not
seem to have it.
Here is a list of the Failed apps:
ScanCard: I
scanned my wife's business card and the link facebook.com/rubynlilah became
facebook.comrubynlilah. no backslash so
the link would not work.
Another test card had Eat In-Take Out on the card which
became Cat In-Take out. Not great.
SamCard: Same
issue with my wife's business card.
facebook.com/rubynlilah became facebook.comrubynlilah. Again backslash
so the link would not work.
WorldCard: There
was No Facebook address that even showed up. My wife's Etsy shop web address
www.Etsy.com/shop/rubynlilah became www.Etsy.mm/shop/rubynlilah. In addition they only 5 cards free to scan at
the start then you need to upgrade to a paid version.
